Creativity + Arts Education Are Essential

Arts Now San Bernardino County is a community partner with Create CA (formerly California Alliance for Arts Education) and serves as a coordinating organization for the advocacy of equitable access to in-school arts education for all K-12 students. We believe that creativity and arts education are essential to building the society we all want to be a part of. From improved student engagement to increased academic achievement, the benefits of a creative education have profound and lasting impact on K-12 students. It's time for us to join together to ensure that every student receives the quality arts education they deserve.

California's Education code promises visual art, music, dance, theater and media arts classes for each K-12 student, but few schools are in compliance with this mandate. California Arts Education Data Project concludes that only 37% of San Bernardino County students participate in the arts, and that access is significantly lower in low-income schools. This finding confirms what most arts education advocates understand – that access to arts education is not equitable in California K-12 public schools. Where community resources support a complete education, the arts exist; where those resources are lacking due to economic disadvantage, the arts and its many benefits for students are marginalized.
